In Badajoz you can take a train or bus to Madrid, there are many. If you ask me the easiest way was to rent a car and drive yourself, the roads are very easy, from Portalegre to Badajoz it's just a 35 minute drive and to Madrid is an easy free highway 4 hour drive. It’s very easy man, just go over to Badajoz, not very far, in a taxi it should be around 25 euros or you could take a bus to Elvas and then to Badajoz it’s just 20 km.

Here's a link for the Spanish rail network in English. I've had a look at the map and yes I can see it's a bit complicated.
